Brahma’s Lament

August 9

Creator of the universe,
The writer of every mortal’s fate,
Brahma keeps filling pages
Recording every destiny and date.

Carrying his book of fate,
He came to Mother Bhavani’s home,
Placed it before her with a thud,
And shared his sorrow and gloom.

“Look, Mother Bhavani, at your
Beloved Bholenath’s strange deed.
I am troubled, I am distressed,
His ways are causing me great grief.

Curiously, the Mother asked,
‘Tell me, what has happened to you?
Why are you troubled by my sons?
What problem have they brought to you?’”

Brahma opened his book and said,
“Just look at all this bloodshed!
Whatever I write, I have to erase
After Shiva Shambhu grants his blessings instead.

To one whom I have given nothing,
He grants a golden vessel full;
Whatever fate I carefully write,
He changes it completely, making my work dull!

Look at these crooked, tangled lines,
See how messy my pages have become.
My entire book is getting spoiled—
I am truly troubled by what he has done.

Because of his carefree ways,
I have become completely distressed.
Again and again I write and erase;
This endless task has become a test.

No more writing and rewriting,
No more cutting every line!
Please free me from this duty,
I would rather beg and survive somehow.”

Mother Bhavani looked at Baba,
With a questioning gaze so deep.
“What should I do? What can I say?
Please tell me, what should I keep?”

“I am just the way I am,
And I shall remain so forever.
Even through eternity, I will be the same;
I shall bless my devotees, whatever the endeavor.

My doors are always open,
All may come and ask for a boon.
Whatever they desire, they receive—
Their begging bowls are filled to the brim soon.”
