Who should be worshipped first?
A dispute arose over this.
The gods gathered at Mount Kailash,
And together they made a rule.
“Whoever first completes
A journey around the Earth
Shall be declared the foremost deity,
The first among all the gods.”
All the gods arrived,
Mounted upon their divine vehicles,
Filled with excitement in their hearts,
Dreaming of becoming the first.
With Lord Mahadev’s permission,
A time was fixed for the race,
And the news was announced
Throughout the celestial world.
Saraswati came on her swan,
Lakshmi arrived on her owl,
Kartikeya rode his peacock,
And Govinda came upon Garuda.
Durga and Kali came on lions,
Each ready to prove their might.
At the appointed time, they all set out
To circle the Earth,
Doing their very best, at great speed,
To become the first to be worshipped.
Mighty, elephant-faced Ganesha
Looked thoughtfully at his little mouse.
He wondered how far
His tiny vehicle could really take him.
Suddenly, wisdom flashed in his mind.
He made a decision at once.
He seated both his parents
Upon a sacred stone.
Then mounting his mouse,
He began to circle them.
After going around them seven times,
He quietly sat down at their feet.
The day passed, and the others returned.
They found Ganesha already seated there.
“How could Ganesha have arrived first?”
Everyone was completely puzzled.
When the moment of judgment came,
Shiva asked Lord Ganesha,
“Why did you circle around us?
Tell me, what was your reasoning?”
Ganesha replied,
“I thought that the whole universe
Exists at the feet of my parents.
If I circle around you both,
My purpose will surely be fulfilled.”
Everyone was amazed
By the brilliance of his wisdom.
No one had imagined such an answer.
And from one perspective,
His claim was absolutely right.
By unanimous agreement,
Ganesha was chosen as the foremost deity.
Using his extraordinary wisdom,
He had won the competition.
And ever since that day,
Lord Ganesha has been worshipped first.
No one has ever taken another name
Before invoking his blessings.
