Kubera, the god of wealth,
Had grown exceedingly proud.
A storm of vanity arose within him,
And he wished to display his riches to the world.
He thought, “Let me invite Lord Mahadev’s family
To a grand feast at my home.
On this occasion, I shall show
The Father of the Universe my wealth and grandeur.”
He reached Mount Kailash, riding upon his celestial vehicle,
And stood before Shiva and Parvati.
He humbly expressed his wish,
Inviting them to his home for a feast.
Mahadev understood the thought
Hidden deep within Kubera’s heart.
Kubera wished to display
His wealth and greatness before them.
Thinking that his pride must be removed,
Mahadev said to Kubera,
“Take little Ganesha with you.
We are busy with some work.”
Kubera took young Ganesha
To his magnificent palace.
As soon as he arrived,
Lambodara began asking for food,
“Why is there a delay?”
The food was already prepared,
And soon it was served before Ganesha.
The little Lord began to eat,
And no one could stop him.
Slowly, he ate all the dishes.
They prepared them again and again,
Yet his hunger remained unsatisfied.
When all the grains were exhausted,
He continued asking for more and more.
When nothing was left to eat,
Gajavadan began eating the household articles themselves.
Seeing his enormous hunger,
Kubera, the god of wealth, became frightened.
He wondered anxiously,
“How can I satisfy my divine guest?”
Terrified and deeply worried,
Kubera hurried back to Mount Kailash
And approached Lord Shiva.
He told him about his plight,
Looking completely distressed.
Mahadev gave him a little rice and said,
“Cook this and offer it to my child.
In this way, you will be able
To satisfy my son’s hunger.”
Kubera cooked the rice
And lovingly fed it to young Ganesha.
Thus, at last, he was able
To calm the hunger of the Lord of the Ganas.
Kubera’s pride in his wealth and grandeur
Was completely shattered.
He had learned a precious lesson—
The true wisdom of humility.
