They spend their day
In the practice of the yoga of laziness,
Yet when it comes to giving knowledge,
They are always the very first.
The lazy have three tasks—
Eating, drinking, and resting;
Never moving or stirring,
They have no work to do.
If they happen to fall
Into a dry well,
They think, “Let me sleep here for now;
It will be morning, then I’ll see.
Should I stay here, or climb out?”
Watching others move ahead,
They keep sitting and envying them;
“Let others go and reach their destination,
We will reach too”—such is their attitude.
They have countless excuses
For not doing any work;
They eagerly wish
To gain everything without hard work.
“How can I study here?
It’s not even time to eat.
I don’t wake up this early;
Besides, what reward will I get?”
If they go to cut the grass,
The sickle somehow breaks;
If they go to stitch a garment,
The cloth itself gets cut.
Whatever work they undertake,
They always have some complaint;
Deep in their hearts remains
A constant unwillingness to work.
There is an abundance of idlers
In society today;
A restless desire has grown
To gain everything without effort.
