For the peace of departed souls,
Vedic rituals are performed,
With श्रद्धा, respect and gratitude,
Many offerings are made.
It is a tradition of our heritage,
To remember our ancestors,
Offering sesame, barley and sacred grass
Into the water, as an offering to them.
During these days, the ancestors
Come close to their loved ones,
Receiving the respect due to them,
They return to their own world.
If they do not find their family,
They become deeply disappointed,
And, with sorrow in their hearts,
They are compelled to return.
Lord Rama and Sita
Offered a pind to their father
At Chitrakoot and Gaya,
Performing this sacred act with devotion
For the peace of his soul.
During Pitru Paksha, when
They went to Gaya to perform the Tarpan,
At the auspicious time, the required materials
Could not be brought by Rama and Lakshmana.
Dasharatha had asked Sita,
When the auspicious moment arrived,
“To make a pind of sand itself,
Upon my hand, O Sita.”
Making Phalgu, the Banyan tree, Ketaki,
A Brahmin and a cow
Witnesses to the act,
Sita offered the pind
To King Dasharatha.
When Rama asked for proof,
All except the Banyan tree denied it.
Because of their false testimony,
They became recipients of Sita’s curse.
The Phalgu River would become subterranean,
Ketaki would no longer be used in worship,
The Brahmin would remain poor,
The cow would eat unclean things,
But the Banyan tree would remain immortal forever.
Pitru Paksha holds great significance
Among the followers of Sanatan Dharma,
Among those who worship
Water bodies, the earth, the sun and the moon.
Ancestors are like our personal deities,
While the divine beings belong to everyone.
By pleasing our ancestors,
We receive their blessings.
