Bonded Devotion

↳

Love and surrender are devotion,
To worship without any desire,
Always keeping one’s attention
Fixed at the Lord’s feet.

Devotion with a desire
Is to worship with wishes,
Chanting His name, offering prasad,
And asking something in return.

Like a monkey is devotion—
Holding firmly on to God;
Like a cat is devotion—
Surrendering oneself completely.

“Bonded devotion” is something new,
It has come into fashion today;
Those who practice and promote it
Are our own brothers, they say.

Bound by selfish interests,
They trade with one another;
Officials receive gifts
From their devoted followers.

Offerings too are made
In abundance in such devotion;
There is, however, one difference—
The Lord surely grants His vision.

Whether one wants a name entered,
Or wishes to secure a job,
Wants a transfer arranged,
Or seeks a promotion—

One must make one’s presence felt
Morning and evening, like a courtier;
One must present the famous goods
From one’s own region.

Through such offerings,
Today’s “gods” are bound;
They become pleased with us
And set all our affairs right.

Those who do not play the courtier,
Who neither visit nor attend,
Their files simply remain standing
There, waiting in the queue.
