Mother Jagadamba has arrived,
Riding upon an elephant grand,
To bless us with happiness and prosperity,
And riches and abundance across the land.
Navratri, the sacred festival of devotion,
Of inner strength and purification of the soul,
Devotees worship the Mother’s nine divine forms,
Seeking blessings to make their spirits whole.
For nine days, through chanting, meditation,
Worship, offerings, and prayers divine,
From one chakra to the next, they rise,
Awakening consciousness, making their spirits shine.
Fruits and flowers are offered to the Mother,
Along with delicacies prepared with care,
Ornaments and adornments of every kind,
To please the Goddess beyond compare.
They lovingly adorn the Mother’s form
With kohl, a bindi, and red dye for the feet,
With necklaces, toe rings, bangles, and earrings,
And anklets that make her beauty complete.
Dressed in crimson silk garments,
With golden borders shining bright,
Embellished with delicate floral patterns,
She captivates every heart with her sight.
Fragrant rice of the autumn harvest,
And dishes of countless varieties,
Flavours sweet, sour, bitter, salty, pungent, and astringent,
Are offered with love and devotion’s sincerity.
In her eight divine hands, eight weapons gleam,
A demon lies defeated at her feet,
Her lion stands fierce, with anger blazing,
A mighty guardian, powerful and fearless in the heat.
Having slain the demon, the Mother, too,
Appears in a fierce and wrathful guise,
Her expressions change, her eyes grow wider,
As divine power flashes in her eyes.
She appears just as the beholder perceives her,
In whatever spirit they choose to see;
Her beauty is wondrous, beyond all description,
Filling every heart with awe and mystery.
Drums and dhak, cymbals and other instruments
Resound aloud in a rhythmic, vibrant flow;
Devotees dance with joy and devotion,
Entertaining the Mother with their festive glow.
Incense, lamps, and fragrant guggal smoke
Are offerings the Mother holds dear;
To bring her joy, her faithful devotees
Light them regularly with love sincere.
The Mother’s sacred court is beautifully adorned,
Radiant with grandeur and divine light;
Crowds of devotees gather around her,
Their hearts filled with hope and faith so bright.
With countless forms of reverence and prayer,
Her devotees bow before her again and again;
O Compassionate Mother, shower us with mercy,
And grant us refuge at your feet, free from pain.
