The mighty demon kings, Shumbha and Nishumbha,
Established their rule with overwhelming might.
They seized control of all the three worlds
And drove the gods from heaven by force and fright.
Remembering Mother Ambika’s words,
The gods began to pray with devotion.
From Goddess Parvati’s divine form,
Mahasaraswati emerged, radiant with celestial emotion.
The eight-armed Goddess, fair and bright,
Held the conch, discus, mace, and plough.
With trident, bell, bow, and arrows,
She stood resplendent, majestic, and proud.
Hearing tales of her peerless beauty,
Shumbha’s heart was filled with desire.
To bring the Goddess to him,
He sent his commander, Dhumralochana, to acquire her.
With a single thunderous roar,
The Goddess reduced him to ashes.
Her furious lion roared aloud,
Destroying the demon army in violent clashes.
Chanda, Munda, and Raktabija, too,
Were vanquished in Mahakali’s fearsome form.
Along with the Seven Divine Mothers and Shivadooti,
The Goddess stood firm, defying every storm.
Then Nishumbha himself entered the fray,
Drunk with pride in his strength and power.
With a vast army and a terrifying presence,
He came, intending to make the Goddess his bride that hour.
For a long time, the two engaged in battle,
Wielding divine weapons with furious might.
At last, transforming into a mighty warrior,
He challenged her fiercely in the heart of the fight.
Hearing his challenge, the Great Goddess
Blazed with anger, fierce and grand.
With a thunderous roar and divine weapons,
She struck him down with her mighty hand.
Witnessing such a crushing defeat,
Shumbha returned with an even greater force.
Mocking the Goddess, he challenged her boldly,
Demanding she fight alone, without any support.
The Great Goddess absorbed all the other Goddesses
Into her own divine and radiant form.
“These are all manifestations of my power,”
She declared, standing majestic and warm.
Once again, the two engaged in battle,
A terrifying war of unimaginable might.
The earth, the heavens, and all ten directions
Resounded with tumultuous cries of the fight.
Enraged by his impending defeat,
The demon king burned with furious flame.
He attacked Mahasaraswati relentlessly,
With the sharpest weapons he could claim.
The Great Goddess met each assault
With equal strength and divine skill.
When he employed his magical illusions,
She countered them with her own will.
At last, Shumbha, too, was defeated,
And victory cries filled the celestial sky.
The gods rejoiced with boundless happiness,
For heaven was theirs once again, by and by.
Mahasaraswati, the Great Goddess,
Embodies wisdom, discernment, and awareness.
She descends to Earth to destroy
Arrogance, unrighteousness, and darkness.
Her radiant splendour shines like
The moon on an autumn night.
She swiftly dispels ignorance and darkness,
Filling the world with wisdom and light.
She blesses her devotees with supreme knowledge,
With concentration and speech made pure.
She is the foundation and refuge of all three worlds,
And enlightens every mind, making wisdom endure.
