INFLATION

↳

By Vidya

The burden of inflation weighs heavily
Upon the nation’s youth today.
Food, drinks, and travelling around—
Everything essential costs more each day.

Food items have become so dear,
Pizza, burgers, KFC chicken too.
Eating out at restaurants
Brings the mutton they long to chew.

Who wants to cook lentils and bread?
It seems like far too much trouble.
The children’s hearts are drawn to hotels,
Where dining out has become their bubble.

The demands of status rule the day;
Branded clothes and shoes they require.
Watches, mobiles, pens, and laptops—
Only high-end things can satisfy their desire.

They spend a fortune without a thought,
Though their earnings may be quite small.
Nothing remains in the name of savings;
Their money disappears, leaving nothing at all.

They keep complaining, “Everything is dear!”
Yet rush towards the costly things they see.
They won’t even glance at cheaper goods,
As if affordability were beneath their dignity.

With a salary of one lakh a month,
They buy phones worth two lakhs or more.
Paying EMIs month after month,
They ruin their finances at the very core.

Ours is an age of showing off,
Of keeping one’s status shining high.
Cheap goods are labelled inferior,
Be it a suit, a sari, or a tie.

By embracing expensive possessions,
They find their wounded pride restored.
They lament the rising cost of living,
Yet fear the cheaper things they can afford.

Even labourers, through hard-earned wages,
Buy the newest mobiles they can find.
They spend less on food and water,
But recharging their phones stays firmly in mind.

The meaning of basic necessities
Has changed among the lower middle class.
Mobiles, chargers, cameras, and the internet
Are now essentials that none can bypass.

Inflation keeps on rising higher,
While people grow wealthier in appearance.
For the latest mobile phone models,
Long queues form with eager persistence.
