DHANTERAS

↳

The Auspicious Festival

On the thirteenth day of Kartik bright,
Lord Dhanvantari appeared in divine light.
With a pot of nectar in His hand,
He came to save the gods from distress and plight.

By the curse of Sage Durvasa,
The gods had lost their strength and might.
They sought Lord Vishnu’s divine refuge,
Tormented by the demons’ dreadful might.

Seeing their plight, the Lord then said,
“Do not lose hope or be dismayed.
To regain your strength and power,
Undertake a new endeavour today.”

“With the demons’ support and aid,
Let the ocean be churned, as I have said.
From its depths shall nectar arise,
And free you from your helpless state.”

Both sides reached an agreement,
And preparations soon began.
The churning rod and the mighty rope
Were gathered according to the plan.

Lord Vishnu took the form of a tortoise,
And supported Mount Mandara below.
Vasuki, the serpent, became the rope,
And the churning began with a mighty flow.

Fourteen precious treasures emerged,
And finally, Dhanvantari appeared.
Holding the sacred pot of nectar,
Both gods and demons rejoiced and cheered.

Lord Vishnu Himself had appeared
In the divine form of Dhanvantari.
Later, assuming the enchanting form of Mohini,
He resolved their dispute with divine mastery.

Today marks the birth of Dhanvantari,
This sacred and auspicious Dhanteras day.
A time to buy gold, silver and utensils,
And pray for health and happiness along the way.

His sacred pot is a symbol divine,
Of wealth, prosperity and abundance.
Buying vessels made of precious metals
Is considered auspicious, a blessing of Goddess Lakshmi.

We clean our homes and light the lamps,
Praying for health and prosperity.
To drive away sorrow and poverty,
We invoke Lord Dhanvantari with devotion and sincerity.
