Nandi, the Blessed Messenger

July 30

When Lord Vishnu rests in heavenly sleep,
Lord Shiva wakes in timeless grace.
With hearts devoted, souls aflame,
His faithful gather at His sacred place.

Within the shrine sits Shiva serene,
With His divine and loving family near;
At the temple gate stands mighty Nandi,
Guardian faithful, ever sincere.

Strong as a mountain, calm and still,
He watches each pilgrim come and go.
Into his patient ears they whisper
The hopes no other soul may know.

The endless line moves slow and soft,
Then pauses in a silent tide;
A thousand prayers in whispered breaths
Are gently placed at Nandi’s side.

For Shiva chose His dearest friend
To hear the burdens mortals bear.
With steadfast heart and loyal soul,
He keeps each humble, trusting prayer.

I often wonder how he remembers
The countless voices day by day,
And how he bears each longing safely
To where Lord Mahadev holds sway.

An old and cherished tale is told—
One every devotee has heard:
Of gentle Nandi, blessed and true,
Who once misplaced his Master’s word.

“Tell them,” said Shiva, “bathe a hundred days,
And eat but once with grateful mind.”
Yet Nandi, simple, pure of heart,
Left half the message far behind.

He reached the earth and smiling said,
“Feast a hundred days, bathe but one!”
The heavens echoed with surprise—
His task was charmingly undone.

Lord Shiva laughed and shook His head:
“My faithful friend, what have you done?
If people eat a hundred meals,
They’ll have to sow before they’re won.

Go till the soil, protect My children,
Share every sorrow, every cheer.
Stand beside them through every season;
Let them always know you’re near.

Serve them as you have served Me—
With love that seeks no praise or gain.
In such devotion lies true worship,
The purest path one can attain.”

So even now, through crowded temples,
Where eager pilgrims softly press,
They lean to whisper in Nandi’s ear
Their dreams, their griefs, their happiness.

Though simple-hearted, calm, and gentle,
He never turns a soul away.
By Shiva’s boundless grace and blessing,
Each whispered prayer still finds its way.
