August 4
They are two different things indeed—
One brings serenity, the other unrest;
One calms the troubled mind,
The other leaves the heart distressed.
Like ghee poured into a blazing fire,
Desire keeps burning bright;
“More, more, and still more I need”—
Thus grows our longing day and night.
Thousand, lakh, crore and billion,
Trillion, quadrillion, beyond all count—
Whatever keeps coming our way,
We keep collecting without restraint.
In dreams of limitless riches,
Goddess Lakshmi keeps on giving;
While feeding the flame of greed,
She scatters treasures for our living.
But wealth is fickle—it never stays,
It wanders from place to place;
It fills the heart with pride and ego,
Then brings a downfall without a trace.
Whether wealth is left by ancestors,
Earned by children, or gained through deceit,
If neither sacrifice nor wise enjoyment follows,
Destruction may make its bitter retreat.
Peace comes through contentment,
The fire of temptation will cease;
Walk upon the path of truth,
And body and soul shall find their peace.
Until we learn the art of letting go,
Contentment shall never arrive;
And without the gift of inner peace,
Man shall regret his life and strive.
Peace and contentment are treasures of the mind,
They save us from turmoil and unrest;
Whether we possess a hundred or countless riches,
All shall remain behind when we depart.
The choice, therefore, rests with us—
To renounce, to turn our minds away;
To hold on to peace and contentment,
Or wander through the ocean of wealth each day.
