August 7
I fear those who avert their eyes,
Those who remain silent and disguise,
Those who stoop and scrape their way,
Those who deceive without dismay—
I am afraid.
I fear the news that twists the truth,
Cold behaviour devoid of warmth,
Counterfeit love that looks so real,
And love that refuses to reveal—
I am afraid.
I fear a life spent crying on,
The loss of things we depend upon,
Strangers suddenly entering our space,
And winning back those who turn away—
I am afraid.
I fear when the Internet disappears,
When the helper fails to appear,
Empty words of shameless praise,
And crooked smiles in hidden ways—
I am afraid.
I fear the deeds of land mafias,
The mounting interest on unpaid loans,
The tangled ways of courts and cases,
And the changing moods of lawyers—
I am afraid.
I fear the rules of discipline,
Whatever goes against the mind within,
Flowers used in superstitious rites,
And dust that clouds our inner sight—
I am afraid.
I fear the leaders’ hunger strikes,
The tensions that administration hikes,
The slogans shouted by the youth,
And tempting promises from those who oppose—
I am afraid.
I fear calls from numbers unknown,
The complications of love’s triangle,
The winds that roar before a storm,
And laughter suddenly turning into silence—
I am afraid.
I fear the traps of cyber fraud,
The flames of vengeance burning hard,
A girl who vanishes without a trace,
And the filth that poverty leaves in place—
I am afraid.
I fear the doctor’s mounting fee,
The hospital bill waiting for me,
The attendant’s irritation and stare,
And the sharpness of pain we bear—
I am afraid.
I fear the stance of religious heads,
The hunger of those by fanaticism led,
The comforts enjoyed by spiritual thrones,
And the suffering of ordinary souls—
I am afraid.
I fear the knowledge that AI brings,
The wonders and dangers of science’s wings,
The predictions of what tomorrow may be,
And people who believe whatever they hear—
I am afraid.
