August 9
Bhole is his name, and simple is his way,
His deeds are simple, his blessings hold sway.
With a generous heart, Mahadev divine,
Grants every boon with love benign.
The tale of Bhole is strange and grand,
The tale of Bhasmasura—across the land.
To become immortal, the demon prayed,
In endless meditation, his penance was made.
At last, Baba’s meditation broke,
He appeared and gently spoke:
“Ask for a boon, whatever you desire.”
With folded hands and devotion entire,
Bhasmasura asked for this boon inspired:
“Let me be ageless, let me never die,
Let no one ever bring my end nearby.
And whoever’s head my hand shall touch,
Let him turn to ashes at once, as such.”
Such a generous giver was Bhole Nath,
Without much thought, he spoke, “So be it,” forthwith.
The demon smiled after receiving the boon,
And thought, “Let me test it very soon.”
“Why should I go somewhere else to try?
Let me test this boon on you, by and by.
I shall place my hand upon your head,
And test the boon you have just said.”
Hearing this, Baba was bewildered and scared,
By his own blessing, he became ensnared.
He began to flee from the demon’s fright,
Across difficult mountains and paths out of sight.
Indeed, a divine boon has powerful effect;
Even its giver may face its consequence direct.
Once a promise has escaped from the tongue,
It cannot be recalled, once it is sung.
“What shall I do? How shall I flee?
How can I save myself from this calamity?”
Baba ran ahead at lightning pace,
While the demon followed in furious chase.
The great giver, beloved by all devotees,
Was himself running from the demon’s atrocities.
From the heavens, all the gods could see
This strange and frightening tragedy.
When Lord Vishnu saw what was going on,
He understood the demon’s intention.
Because of Mahadev’s generous heart,
The demon had trapped him with his clever art.
“Something must be done, and done very soon,
We must overcome the power of this boon.
Otherwise, disaster will surely arise,
And this demon may harm countless lives.”
Thinking deeply within his heart,
The Lord decided to play his part.
He took the enchanting form of a dancer,
And approached the demon with graceful manner.
Touched by the beauty of the divine maid,
A strange delight in the demon was made.
“I shall think about the boon later on;
For now, let me enjoy this joy till dawn.”
The Lord began a graceful dance,
And asked the demon to join the dance.
Lost in the rhythm, he followed the beat,
Moving his feet to the music sweet.
From the heavens, the gods watched the scene,
The divine art of the Lord serene.
The rhythm, the melody, the graceful pose—
A wondrous spectacle before them arose.
Bhole stood still, as though unaware,
But he knew what Vishnu was planning there.
He understood how the danger would end,
And trusted the wisdom of his divine friend.
During the dance, Govinda raised his hand
And placed it gently upon his head.
Lost in the dance, the demon forgot,
And copied the very same movement on the spot.
And then, in just a moment’s span,
Bhasmasura turned to ashes where he had been.
Cheers of joy filled the sky and earth,
And the whole world rejoiced in mirth.
Simple-hearted, loving Shambhu divine,
Gives everything to all who come to his shrine.
He removes the stains upon the brow,
And fills the lives of his devotees with abundance somehow.
