I was fortunate to get a chance
To see the Grand Canyon of America,
Where the Colorado River carved
A natural valley of wondrous grandeur.

With soil, sand, and gravel,
The flowing river came along,
Through its mighty power of erosion,
It painted the canyon in colours strong.

Long and wide, it stretches afar,
In the northwestern land of America,
Situated in the state of Arizona,
Its glory waves proudly across the world.

It was once home to Native Americans,
Who lived in caves and dwellings there;
Names like Vishnu, Shiva, Rama and Buddha
And many temples were found everywhere.

Names from different cultures and faiths
Were also given to its formations—
Apollo, Isis and Zoroaster
Adorn the hills and elevations.

Countless magnificent peaks and mounds,
Rocks, ravines, gorges and deep valleys—
Nature has beautifully adorned them all
With breathtaking and splendid galleries.

Red, green, grey and rosy hues,
Brown, slate-grey, yellow and gold—
They look as though a painter’s brush
Created them on a canvas bold.

The river carved them as it flowed,
And left them just the way they were;
Human hands made no attempt
To interfere with nature’s artwork there.

Nature is a wondrous artist,
Displaying masterpieces rare;
Layers of rocks of different ages
Form delicate patterns everywhere.

California condors and bald eagles,
Rare and majestic birds, are seen;
They survive by feeding upon
Small insects and creatures in between.

Mule deer, bighorn sheep and elk,
Along with the mighty mountain lion,
All inhabit this beautiful land
And make its wilderness come alive.

UNESCO did not declare it
A World Heritage Site without a reason;
It took millions upon millions of years
For nature to create this magnificent vision.
