“Too Much”

Anything that is too much
is always dangerous.

Living within limits
is essential in life.

Gautam Buddha had said
to follow the Middle Path,
to tie the strings of the veena
in the right proportion.

Neither too loose
nor too tight—
the music comes out right;
when they go above or below,
the sound remains lifeless.

“Excess should be avoided everywhere,”
our learned scholars too have said.
Excess in any form,
excess of wealth,
ultimately brings destruction.

Too much luxury,
too much devotion,
destroys a human being’s
physical and mental strength.

Sita had crossed
the limit of Lakshman Rekha;
the virtuous lady
had to suffer
abduction and the pain of separation.

When the seas overflow their boundaries,
when rivers flow beyond their limits,
there will be turmoil everywhere,
and the world will be drowned.

Too much food,
too much sleep,
too much wandering,
and sitting idle—

all of these make
our daily routine futile
and disturb
the rhythm of the seasons.

The sun, the moon, and the stars,
the oceans, the earth, and the sky
move in perfect balance;
all remain within their limits.

It is right to remain within limits,
never to abandon self-restraint.
If we wish to live a happy life,
we must remain within our boundaries.
