Cutting through the field’s boundary ridge,
All the water had been drained away.
“How will I farm my field now?
What a betrayal they have played!”
Before dawn, Vishnu went
Walking towards the field to see.
All the water had flowed away;
The field lay dry as dry could be.
“This must be Sonua’s doing.
His crop has already been planted.
He has ruined my farming—
How could he be so careless?”
He came home and shouted at his brother,
Abusing him loudly in anger.
Sonua, rubbing his sleepy eyes,
Came outside and asked, “What’s the matter?”
“Why are you shouting at me?
Why abuse me so early in the morning?
I have done nothing to you.
At least find out the truth before accusing me.”
“Who else would care about this?
Your field lies right beside mine.
You let all the water run away—
How will my field survive now?”
Hearing all the commotion,
The villagers also came out.
They began watching the quarrel
Of the two brothers like a free show.
They exchanged angry abuses,
Loudly and without restraint.
Neither brother was less than the other;
Like two lions, they faced each other.
It was nothing unusual there;
Such things happened quite often.
Over one matter or another,
A quarrel would always break out.
When their anger finally subsided,
Both returned to their daily work.
By afternoon, they began searching
For a way to bring water to the fields.
Sonu said, “Water can be brought
From the embankment, my brother.
I did not drain the water, believe me.
Please trust what I am saying, my brother.”
“Come, let us make arrangements.
The crops must be grown somehow.
What will we gain by fighting?
We have to work hard anyhow.”
By evening, after making arrangements,
Both brothers returned home.
Sitting together in the same place,
They shared roasted grains and ate.
Everyone was astonished
To see their brotherly bond.
They fought in the morning
And loved each other by evening.
Indeed, these two were truly brothers.
